Vinyl Flooring: what it is and who it's for

What it is

Sheet vinyl is a flexible floor covering supplied on a roll and cut to fit the room in as few pieces as possible. It comes in wood, stone, tile and plain designs, and gives you a smooth, practical surface that's easy to look after.

Who it's for

Families who want a kitchen floor that survives everyday life, landlords who need practical floors that clean easily between tenants, and anyone updating a bathroom, utility room, downstairs toilet or hallway on a sensible budget.

When you need it

When your current floor is lifting at the edges, cracked, stained or holding water around the sink, toilet or washing machine. Also when you're fitting a new kitchen or bathroom and want the floor to finish the job off properly.

Why a professional fit matters

Vinyl looks simple, but it's unforgiving. Cuts around pipes, toilets and kitchen units need to be precise, the subfloor needs to be smooth or every lump shows through, and edges must be finished properly or water gets underneath. A professional fit avoids gaps, bubbles and curling corners.

  • Water-resistant and easy to clean
  • Wide range of looks and budgets
  • Neat, sealed edges
  • Ideal for busy family homes and rentals

What happens if you leave it, or get it wrong

A worn or badly fitted vinyl floor in a wet room of the house can quickly turn into a bigger problem.

Water getting underneath

Gaps at the edges or around the toilet let water seep under the vinyl, where it can soak into the floorboards or screed beneath.

Smells and mould

Trapped moisture under old flooring leads to musty smells and staining that cleaning won't shift.

Slips and trips

Lifting edges and torn seams catch toes, especially in kitchens where you're carrying hot pans.

Damage to the subfloor

Leave it long enough and you may need boards replaced as well as the floor.

Common mistakes we see

  • Laying vinyl over an uneven floor, so every nail head and board joint shows through.
  • Cutting the sheet too tight to the wall, leaving no room for natural movement.
  • Using the wrong adhesive, or none at all, in rooms that get wet.
  • Leaving edges unfinished around baths, toilets and kitchen plinths.

How we do it

  1. Step 1: Get in touch

Call or send the quote form telling us which rooms you'd like done.

  2. Step 2: Measure and check

We measure the room and look at the floor underneath to see whether any preparation is needed.

  3. Step 3: Clear quote

You get a price for the vinyl, fitting and any preparation. Old flooring removal is £40 a room.

  4. Step 4: Fitting

We cut the sheet to the room, shape it around pipes, units and sanitaryware, and fix it so it lies flat.

  5. Step 5: Finish

Edges and thresholds finished, offcuts cleared and the floor ready to use.

What you get

Water-resistant

A sealed, one-piece surface that handles spills and splashes.

Easy to clean

Sweep and mop. No grout lines to scrub.

Warm and comfortable

Softer and warmer underfoot than ceramic tiles.

Good value

A smart, practical floor at a sensible price.

Quick turnaround

Most kitchens and bathrooms are fitted in a day, so the room is back in use fast.

Fully insured

Up to £5m of cover on every job.

Vinyl Flooring in detail

Types of vinyl

Cushioned sheet vinyl has a foam backing that makes it soft and warm underfoot, which is why it's so popular in kitchens and bathrooms. Thicker, heavier sheet vinyls have a tougher wear layer for busier rooms. If you want the look of individual planks or tiles with extra durability, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is a step up and we fit that too.

Designs range from realistic wood grain and slate effects to classic tiles and plain colours. A larger room may need a seam; we plan the layout so any join falls where it's least noticeable.

Why the subfloor matters

Sheet vinyl follows whatever is beneath it. Floorboards with raised edges, old tile grout lines or patches of adhesive will all show through over time. On older floors we may recommend plywood or a levelling compound first. We'll explain why if we think it's needed and include it clearly in your quote.

Where vinyl works best

Kitchens, bathrooms, en-suites, downstairs toilets, utility rooms and hallways are the classic places. Vinyl is also a good choice in rental properties because it's easy to clean between tenancies. In commercial and care settings, where slip resistance matters, safety vinyl is usually the better option.

Residential and commercial

Domestic cushioned vinyl is designed for homes. Shops, staff kitchens and busy communal areas need a heavier commercial or safety vinyl that stands up to heavy footfall. We fit both and will tell you which one suits your space.

Vinyl Flooring questions

How much does vinyl flooring cost?

It depends on the size of the room, the range you choose and whether the floor needs any preparation. We measure and give you an honest quote.

How long does vinyl take to fit?

Most kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms are done in a day.

Can vinyl go in a bathroom?

Yes. It's water-resistant and easy to clean, which makes it a popular bathroom floor.

Can you take up my old floor?

Yes. We take up and remove your old flooring for £40 a room.

Will lumps in my floor show through?

They can. We check the floor when we measure and recommend preparation if it's needed.

How long does vinyl last?

A good vinyl, fitted on a smooth base and looked after properly, lasts for years. Thicker ranges with a tougher wear layer last longer in busy rooms.

Do you fit vinyl in Rochdale and Heywood?
