Laminate Flooring: what it is and who it's for

What it is

Laminate is a layered floor with a printed wood (or stone) image under a tough, clear wear layer. The boards click together and float over an underlay, giving you a hard floor that looks like timber.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want the look of wood in a living room, bedroom, dining room or hallway on a sensible budget, and landlords who want a hard-wearing, easy-clean floor.

When you need it

When carpet is worn out in a busy room, when you want a hard floor that's easy to keep clean around pets, or when you're redecorating and want a fresh, modern look.

Why a professional fit matters

Laminate is only as good as its base and its edges. An uneven floor makes boards bounce and joints creak; no expansion gap makes it buckle; rough cuts at doors and skirtings spoil the look. We get these details right.

  • Wood-effect looks for less
  • Tough, scratch-resistant surface
  • Quick to fit
  • Suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways

What happens if you leave it, or get it wrong

A laminate floor that's laid in a hurry tends to show it within months.

Bouncy, creaky boards

On an uneven floor the boards flex and the joints wear.

Buckling

Without expansion gaps laminate can lift as the room warms and cools.

Chipped joints

Poorly locked boards leave raised edges that chip and catch.

Water damage

Standard laminate doesn't like standing water, so the room choice and edge finish matter.

Common mistakes we see

  • Skipping the underlay or using the wrong type.
  • Fitting boards tight to the walls.
  • Laying laminate in a wet bathroom.
  • Short, choppy board ends that look unnatural.

Laminate Flooring in detail

Choosing laminate

Laminate comes in different thicknesses and wear ratings. Thicker boards feel more solid underfoot; higher wear ratings suit busier rooms. Finishes range from smooth to embossed textures that follow the wood grain. Some ranges have water-resistant cores for hallways and kitchens.

Underlay and preparation

The right underlay smooths small dips, reduces noise and, on concrete, provides a moisture barrier. Floors with larger dips or high spots need levelling first so the boards don't bounce.

Laminate vs LVT

Laminate is usually cheaper and very scratch-resistant. LVT is warmer, quieter and better with water. We'll help you decide based on the room.

Homes and businesses

In homes laminate suits living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways. In offices and rentals, it gives a smart, practical floor at a good price.
