LVT Flooring: what it is and who it's for
What it is
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is a premium vinyl floor that comes as individual planks or tiles. It recreates real wood and stone in detail but is warmer, quieter and more forgiving than either, and it stands up well to water.
Who it's for
Homeowners who want a hard floor in a kitchen, open-plan living area, hallway or bathroom; families with pets and children; and businesses that want a smart floor that copes with footfall.
When you need it
When you're renovating a kitchen or knocking through to open plan, replacing tired laminate or tiles, or want one continuous floor across several rooms.
Why a professional fit matters
LVT shows every flaw underneath it. Glue-down LVT needs a smooth, level, dry subfloor and precise cutting; click LVT needs the right base and expansion gaps. Our team is trained and certified in LVT fitting, so the planks lock, line up and sit flat.
- Trained and certified in LVT fitting
- Realistic wood and stone effects
- Hard-wearing and water-resistant
- Precise cuts and a clean finish
What happens if you leave it, or get it wrong
LVT is a significant spend. Fitting it badly wastes that money quickly.
Planks lifting or gapping
On an uneven or poorly prepared floor, joints open up and edges lift.
Visible ridges
Any bumps beneath glue-down LVT telegraph through, especially in side light.
Moisture problems
Laying over damp concrete without the right preparation can make the adhesive fail.
Costly redo
Replacing a failed LVT floor means paying for materials and labour twice.
Common mistakes we see
- Skipping subfloor preparation to save money.
- Not letting the planks acclimatise to the room before fitting.
- Mixing planks from one box at a time, so the pattern repeats noticeably.
- Forgetting expansion gaps on click systems.

LVT Flooring in detail
Glue-down vs click LVT
Glue-down (dry-back) LVT is bonded to a prepared, smoothed subfloor. It's very stable, ideal for large areas and underfloor heating, and lets you create patterns such as herringbone. Click (rigid-core) LVT locks together and floats over the subfloor, which can make it quicker to install, though it still needs a flat base.
We'll recommend the right system for your room, budget and subfloor.
Patterns and layouts
Straight plank layouts are classic and timeless. Herringbone and chevron patterns add a high-end feel to hallways and living spaces. Tile formats suit stone looks in kitchens and bathrooms. Design strips and borders can define zones in an open-plan room. Planning the layout carefully avoids awkward thin cuts at doorways.
Subfloor preparation
Preparation is the difference between an LVT floor that looks perfect for years and one that fails. On timber floors that usually means plywood; on concrete it often means a levelling compound. We'll explain exactly what your floor needs.
Homes and businesses
In homes, LVT is popular in kitchens, open-plan areas and bathrooms. In shops, offices and salons it gives a smart look with heavy-duty wear. Commercial ranges have thicker wear layers designed for higher footfall.
